The first week of November Mike Villeneuve, Client Service Associate II, participated in a mission trip to Comendador, Elias Pina, Dominican Republic through St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church in Oshkosh. The team of 16 spent a week working on the parish/mission house of Parroquia Santa Theresa de Jesus. They spent time cleaning, painting the interior of the mission house, installing new fans and lighting, needed electrical and plumbing repairs, and assembling new bunks beds for future missionary groups to enjoy. They also painted the exterior of the neighboring church and restored running water to the adjacent restrooms, which hadn’t been usable for several years. In their free time the team was able to interact with the local population, enjoy authentic Dominican food, travel to some outlying mountain villages along the Haiti–Dominican Republic border, visit the local Jesuit run High School, and many other amazing experiences. On the last day of the trip they had time to explore historic Santo Domingo taking in many historical sites including the Cathedral of Santa María la Menor (completed in 1540 is the oldest cathedral in the Americas), the ruins of Monasterio de San Francisco (the first monastery built in the new world), and Alcazar de Colón (a former residence of the Columbus family).
